Santa Fe Institute

Internships and Mentorships

At SFI, resident students — undergraduates through postdoctoral level — participate in multidisciplinary, multigenerational research collaborations. The working environment within these groups is free-form and egalitarian. Students and senior scientists shift, between collecting and analyzing data from literature, modeling (delineating starting assumptions, constructing equations to capture essential processes, listing testable variables, and building hypotheses), and empirical evaluation (compiling and analyzing data to determine the validity of assumptions and accuracy of hypotheses). Responsibilities and rewards, including senior authorships and presentations at meetings, are shared so that everyone has the opportunity to play leadership roles and to learn from seeing manuscripts through to publication.
